Ho trascorso una fantastica estate con quindici concerti negli Stati Uniti (un bel cambiamento rispetto a due–2!– l'anno scorso, quando la pandemia ha cancellato quasi tutto). Sono ugualmente entusiasta di essere tornato in Italia, dovuto in gran parte all'aver stretto un legame con questi due ottimi e simpatici musicisti! Non potrei essere più felice di suonare di nuovo con questi ragazzi. Venerdì abbiamo un concerto al Jazz Bistrot Firenze, splendidamente rinnovato ed ampliato, e prima voglio farvi sapere qualcosa su di loro.
Mark è americano come me. Nel 2018 la sua famiglia si è trasferita qui a Firenze, la città natale di sua moglie, per imparare la lingua, assorbire la cultura ed essere vicino alla loro famiglia italiana. I suoi figli frequentano la scuola dove insegna mia moglie; prima ancora che ci trasferissimo qui ero stato avvertito che c'era un genitore che era un batterista jazz americano! Lorenzo ed io ci siamo conosciuti tramite Villagio Musicale, il sito web degli elenchi dei musicisti, e ho imparato presto che questo fiorentino pacato, un architetto di mestiere, ha anche una conoscenza e un gusto musicale simili ad ampio raggio che includevano alt. country, old school jazz ma anche jazz contemporaneo.
Mark DiFlorio, batterista e percussionista, è nato e cresciuto a Philadelphia, ma si è formato come musicista a New Orleans. Nella scena musicale di questa città è stato attivo per molti anni, esibendosi frequentemente al New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, fino a quando è stato costretto a trasferirsi a causa dell'uragano Katrina.
Alla fine degli anni novanta, con il gruppo Quintology, ha inciso due dischi che hanno ricevuto critiche molto positive portandolo a suonare anche in Europa, mentre nel 2007, con il sassofonista di New Orleans Devin Phillips, dopo avere inciso il disco Wade in the Water, ha intrapreso una tournée che lo ha portato ad attraversare cinque stati dell'Africa
occidentale. Ha all'attivo numerosi lavori discografici, fra i quali i dischi della Kora Band, un ensemble jazzistico con influenze africane, di cui è fondatore, disponibile su Spotify, assieme ad altri lavori di Mark. Lavora anche come produttore, compositore e sound designer, oltre che come didatta. Ha recentemente pubblicato un EP con il cantautore italiano David Iozzi. Lorenzo Vezzali, contrabbassista fiorentino, si è formato sotto la guida di Raffaello Pareti, Paolino dalla Porta e Alberto Bocini. Ha fatto parte dei laboratori Theatrum di Stefano Battaglia e del gruppo jazz-manouche Hot Club de Florence. Ha suonato, fra gli altri, con Jacopo Martini, Emanuele Parrini, Sebastiano Bon, Ian da Preda, Francesco Canavese, Stefano
Negri, William Tatge, e Nico Gori.

I had a great Summer with fifteen shows in the US (a nice change from two–2!–live performances last year. The pandemic canceled almost everything). I'm equally excited to be back in Italy, due in no small part to having connected with these two excellent, sympathetic musicians! I couldn't be happier than playing with these guys again. We have a gig Friday at the beautifully renovated, expanded Jazz Bistrot Firenze, and I want to let you all know a little about them first.
Mark is another expat Americano. In 2018 his family moved here to Florence, his wife's hometown, to learn the language, absorb the culture, and be close to their Italian family. His kids attend school where my wife teaches; before we even moved here I had been warned there was a parent who was an American jazz drummer! Read his bio below and it should be clear he is no lightweight. Lorenzo and I found each other through Villagio Musicale, the musicians' listings website, and I soon learned this soft-spoken fiorentino, an architect by trade, also has similar wide-ranging knowledge and musical taste that included alt. country and old school as well as contemporary jazz.
Mark DiFlorio grew up in Philly. In 1993 he moved to New Orleans to study music at The University of New Orleans, where he earned a Masters of Music in Jazz Performance. In 1997 he toured Europe with jazz quintet Quintology, that went on to record the "Best new Jazz Album in New Orleans, 1999." He studied drums with the great Johnny Vidacovich, and performed in New Orleans with Astral Project, Quintology, The New Orleans Klezmer Allstars, James Singleton and Ed Petersen and regularly performed at The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.
In 2005 he was displaced by Hurricane Katrina and was relocated to Portland OR by the Portland Jazz Festival and other local businesses. In 2007 he toured West Africa with Devin Phillips and New Orleans Straight Ahead, a quartet that came together in Portland from the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina selected by Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center to act as cultural ambassadors of the United States under the auspices of The U.S. State Department.
He is a founding member of The Kora Band, a West African influenced Jazz ensemble. The group’s 2010 album “Cascades” won Earshot Jazz’s award for “Northwest Jazz Album of the Year” and peaked at #12 on the U.S. World Music radio charts. In 2012, The Kora Band was awarded a prestigious Chamber Music America New Jazz Works Grant for the commissioning and recording of a new concert length work. The resulting album, “New Cities” was released in the Fall of 2015 on Whirlwind Recordings.
Since 2015 he has also been recording and producing young artists, composing music for video and film and doing music supervision and sound design for podcasts. His most recent release is an EP with Italian singer/songwriter David Iozzi. They are the electronic music duo Coriandoli Elettronici. For more info, see Mark's website markdiflorio.com.
